Ōtepoti Becomes The latest community to join in NObela Boycott Action

November 17th 2024

In Ōtepoti Dunedin this afternoon at approximately 1pm supporters of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement picketed outside Woolworths South Dunedin, calling on the supermarket chain to remove Obela products from its shelves. Others entered the supermarket and attached stickers to Obela products, informing customers that Obela supports the illegal Israeli occupation, its human rights violations against Palestinians, and its current genocide against in Gaza.

“Obela, owned by the Sabra Dipping Company and 50% by Israel’s Strauss Group, supports the Israeli military, funding brigades responsible for the killing of thousands of Palestinians. Supermarkets must boycott Obela products to avoid contributing to human rights violations and the ongoing genocide in Gaza.” Said spokesperson Kelly Campbell.

The UN’s 2009 Goldstone Report ( https://digitallibrary.un.org/record/666096?ln=en&v=pdf ) identified the actions of the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip, as war crimes. Since October 7, 2023, 44,548 Palestinians have been killed and in July this year the UN’s international court of justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to end its occupation of the Palestinian territories “as rapidly as possible”. “There are many companies which support the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), by targeting our efforts on just a few, we increase our chances of having an impact. We call on supermarkets and consumers to join in.” Said Campbell
