People’s Assembly outside Hamish Campbell’s Office

28 July 2024

Climate Liberation Aotearoa are facilitating a People’s Assembly this Sunday the 28th July at 12pm, outside MP Hamish Campbell’s office. All members of the public are welcome to come and discuss the Fast Track Bill and what to do about it. A number of experts including Iwi leader and climate change iwi chairs forum co chair Mike Smith will provide information about the Fast Track Bill either in person or via recordings.

“I believe most people value democracy, and value our natural environment – the Fast Track Bill is a major threat to both. CLA is providing an open forum for all perspectives on the Fast Track Bill to be shared.” said spokesperson Ivan Andrews.

“The Fast Track Bill will mean that three, or sometimes four, Ministers will have the power to circumvent all our democratic processes, and push through any mining project or environmental consenting prosess they like. Shane Jones intends to double the number of mines operating in Aotearoa. About 200 companies have been invited to apply under this process, avoiding the oversight of the Environmental Court, the RMA, and local opinion.”

“CLA are confident that most members of the public believe that local communities and mana whenua should get a say about projects being proposed for their regions, rather than having ministers and lobbying interests decide for them.”

“Ilam MP Hamish Campbell is on the Environment Select Committee, and represents the deciding vote on whether amendments to this anti-democratic bill are recommended. The fact that he won’t come to a local community meeting like this, despite almost a month of attempts by his electorate members to meet and discuss with him, makes it clear that he is not representing his electorate. Despite this we look forward to open, and respectful discussions with any community members who attend.” said Andrews.
